NINGBO, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--While the COVID-19 pandemic rages around the world, China has recently seen case numbers drop to low-levels.

At the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), located on the east coast of China, a few international students have been living on campus throughout the outbreak, with no reported case of coronavirus to date.

The timing of the outbreak came just as winter break started at UNNC. Students who didn’t leave for vacation were allowed to continue living in dorms. Liam, a year four international student, is one of them.

Originally from Saudi Arabia, Liam said he considered risks of travelling home outweighed that of staying. Every day, he received updates and guidance on disease prevention from his personal tutor. “I’m well informed of the national epidemic controls and local measures against the coronavirus,” Liam said. “We have restricted time to go in and outside of campus, but so far, not a lot has changed in life because of the effort everyone has put in to help us adjust.”

Since January, UNNC has made a series of COVID-19 contingency plans – including moving all teaching online - to protect the health and safety of the staff and students.

Beside increased sanitation efforts, all sorts of resources are in place to help maintain the physical and mental wellbeing of those in self-isolation, including videos for home workouts, free facemasks, counselling services and medical advice. UNNC has also arranged for the essential campus businesses to reopen, such as canteens and grocery stores, to support those living on campus.

UNNC was the first foreign university to open in China and is part of the University of Nottingham, which is ranked in the top 1% of the higher education institutions in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings. It offers University of Nottingham degrees, which are taught in English and subject to the same rigorous quality assurance standards as the UK.

Students who attend UNNC also receive guaranteed accommodation on campus, with access to complimentary Chinese language classes, sports facilities, an English speaking health clinic and counselling services.
