San Francisco has been crowned America’s “most awake” city following new research.
The study by sleep experts Zoma Sleep found that the California city has the highest ratio of coffee shops to people, with 528 dedicated coffee outlets serving a population of 866,606.
That equates to one coffee shop for every 1,641 people in the city – the highest ratio out of America’s 100 most populated cities.
The study analysed Yelp data to find the number of coffee shops in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the USA, and then cross-referenced them with the number of people living in each place to reveal where coffee is most popular.
Portland in Oregon was second on the list, thanks to its 368 coffee shops and a population of 656,751, which means there is a business selling coffee for every 1,784 people in the city.
Honolulu in Hawaii placed third, with 186 coffee shops and 341,555 people, which is equivalent to a coffee shop for every 1,836 people.
Seattle – home of the original Starbucks, which was first opened in the city in 1971, maintains its reputation as one of the country’s coffee capitals, placing fourth on the list with a coffee shop for every 1,924 residents, thanks to a population of 769,714 and 400 shops.
The top four “most awake” cities are dominated by the West coast, but Florida takes up the fifth and sixth spot with Orlando and Miami respectively.
Los Angeles boasts the most coffee shops in the study, with 727 in total, but its population of 3,970,219 means that it places lower down the list in 37th, with 5,461 people per coffee shop.
New York has the second most coffee shops with 716, however its population of 8,253,213, as the biggest city in America, means it has a fairly low ratio of 11,526 people per coffee shop.
Commenting on the study, a spokesperson for Zoma Sleep said: “America loves coffee, so it’s fascinating to see which major city is the most caffeinated. A morning latte or cappuccino is an essential part of so many people’s morning routines, so coffee shops across the US are providing a crucial, not to mention delicious, service.”
